A Sophisticated Practice

At Eaton Peabody, new associates are quickly immersed in a sophisticated practice that provides opportunities to develop lasting client relationships.  Both new and experienced attorneys are hired for specific positions within departments.  As associates develop skills within their assigned areas, their projects often overlap with other practice groups.  This provides them with exposure to other areas of law and allows them the opportunity to work closely with attorneys outside their assigned department.

“It’s a pleasure to be part of EP’s Business Law practice and to work regularly with some of the top business attorneys in the state. There is a sense of both pride and responsibility to work among these colleagues.” – Jeff Spaulding

Working with a supervising shareholder, associates are immediately exposed to challenging legal work with clients ranging from some of Maine’s most prominent companies to local family businesses and regional nonprofit organizations.   Early on, associates are provided with direct, meaningful client contact and encouraged to take primary responsibility on matters best utilizing their skills.

A Mentoring Program

“The expectations for associate performance are high, as they should be, but there is a great balance between independence in individual practice management, and supervision and management of associate development.” – Sarah L. Reinhart

There is more to being a lawyer than learning the law.  Eaton Peabody’s successful mentoring program pairs an associate with an experienced attorney outside his or her department.  Mentors offer support in the professional development of our associates, serving as sounding boards to help associates navigate their way in the profession.  Mentors offer guidance as associates develop into successful attorneys and contributing members of the firm and community.  The mentoring program also provides a pathway for associates seeking confidential advice and feedback on topics ranging from work/life balance to marketing and client development.

Compensation and Benefits

Associate salaries are competitive. In addition to a base salary, associates become eligible for our bonus program after completing their first calendar year with the firm.  Bonus eligibility is based on achievement of billable and total hour requirements and a variety of quantitative and qualitative factors.

Eaton Peabody offers a comprehensive benefits program including medical, dental, life, disability and long-term care insurance; health savings account; dependent care and medical care reimbursement accounts; a generous 401k plan with firm contributions; parking and cell phone reimbursement; and up to three weeks paid vacation.  Eaton Peabody pays state and county bar fees for its attorneys, as well as membership fees to professional associations related to the attorney’s practice area.

Attorneys are encouraged to attend appropriate continuing legal education programs, including national seminars, in their areas of expertise.

Associate Life

Hands-On Practice

Eaton Peabody offers a sophisticated legal practice with early responsibility.

Associates have an opportunity to work with, and learn from, some of the best lawyers in the state.  We offer high quality, challenging work and a supportive and ambitious environment.

Work/Life Balance

Quality of life is important at Eaton Peabody. The environs surrounding our offices provide  welcoming communities and a plethora of year round activities, including both outdoor recreation and active arts and cultural scenes.  Each provides a wonderful place to raise a family, and local schools rank as some of the best in the state.

“I consider EP to be a ‘life balance’ firm. Every attorney and staff member is completely dedicated to providing our clients with premier legal services, but there is also a clear understanding that life exists beyond the office. If you have family or other personal interests that lie outside of the practice of law, it is possible to balance your time so that you can enjoy every aspect of your life.” – Sarah Newell

Our work expectations are manageable.  In addition to billable hour expectations, associates are encouraged to devote professional non-billable time to things such as client development, bar association activities, continuing legal education, and community involvement.

Community Service

Commitment to our communities is an integral part of Eaton Peabody.  Associates are encouraged to serve on governing boards of local non-profit organizations and immediately become integrated into surrounding communities.  Each office location is home to a great group of professionals who are dedicated to making their communities great places to live, work and raise a family.

“The balance offered by working with highly-competent down-to-earth people on interesting projects in the community where our families live and play is an invaluable intangible not easily quantified, but one that makes the work more rewarding and life much richer. My community service benefits the library, schools, and parks that my children enjoy and attend.” – Jason Barrett
