A Sophisticated Practice
At Eaton Peabody, new associates are quickly immersed in a sophisticated practice that provides opportunities to develop lasting client relationships. Both new and experienced attorneys are hired for specific positions within departments. As associates develop skills within their assigned areas, their projects often overlap with other practice groups. This provides them with exposure to other areas of law and allows them the opportunity to work closely with attorneys outside their assigned department.
“It’s a pleasure to be part of EP’s Business Law practice and to work regularly with some of the top business attorneys in the state. There is a sense of both pride and responsibility to work among these colleagues.” – Jeff Spaulding
Working with a supervising shareholder, associates are immediately exposed to challenging legal work with clients ranging from some of Maine’s most prominent companies to local family businesses and regional nonprofit organizations. Early on, associates are provided with direct, meaningful client contact and encouraged to take primary responsibility on matters best utilizing their skills.
A Mentoring Program
“The expectations for associate performance are high, as they should be, but there is a great balance between independence in individual practice management, and supervision and management of associate development.” – Sarah L. Reinhart
There is more to being a lawyer than learning the law. Eaton Peabody’s successful mentoring program pairs an associate with an experienced attorney outside his or her department. Mentors offer support in the professional development of our associates, serving as sounding boards to help associates navigate their way in the profession. Mentors offer guidance as associates develop into successful attorneys and contributing members of the firm and community. The mentoring program also provides a pathway for associates seeking confidential advice and feedback on topics ranging from work/life balance to marketing and client development.
Compensation and Benefits
Associate salaries are competitive. In addition to a base salary, associates become eligible for our bonus program after completing their first calendar year with the firm. Bonus eligibility is based on achievement of billable and total hour requirements and a variety of quantitative and qualitative factors.

“I consider EP to be a ‘life balance’ firm. Every attorney and staff member is completely dedicated to providing our clients with premier legal services, but there is also a clear understanding that life exists beyond the office. If you have family or other personal interests that lie outside of the practice of law, it is possible to balance your time so that you can enjoy every aspect of your life.” – Sarah Newell
Our work expectations are manageable. In addition to billable hour expectations, associates are encouraged to devote professional non-billable time to things such as client development, bar association activities, continuing legal education, and community involvement.
