Newell joined Eaton Peabody in 2016 after having been in private practice for more than 11 years. His law and government relations ﬁrm provided representation to businesses and nonproﬁts before the Maine Legislature. He was responsible for designing and executing all aspects of clients’ legislative strategy, monitoring initiatives affecting their operations, testifying on their behalf, and cultivating relationships with the Governor’s office, Legislators and other policy leaders. He also provided legal counsel to individuals and businesses with a focus on administrative law. Newell also managed two successful statewide referenda campaigns, handling everything from design and implementation of a strategy, to serving as legal counsel and spokesperson for debates and press events, to fundraising and oversight of the campaign budget. In addition to his legislative responsibilities, he also served as Executive Director of the partnership responsible for statewide collection of non-alcoholic beverage containers; a role he continues to serve.
Prior to going into private practice, Mr. Augur served as the Director of Legislative and Public Affairs for the Maine Department of Health & Human Services, where he was responsible for all aspects of the Department’s media strategy, and oversight of legislative initiatives affecting human services programs. Newell answered press inquiries, conducted television interviews, organized press conferences and managed publication of all releases. He also researched and wrote testimony on bills, monitored their progression through the legislative process, and conferred with and built consensus among Legislators, providers, and advocates regarding amendments and disposition.
Newell’s early career was spent working as an associate at a small defense ﬁrm, and later managing the operations of newly founded charter school.
