Environmental Compliance: Tip of the Month

March 02, 2011

Your business can take a series of small routine steps to ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations. Environmental enforcement actions are often costly, time consuming, and take your focus away from running a productive business. By taking just 15-30 minutes per month to complete each step, your business can identify and correct environmental issues before they become enforcement cases. For the month of March, you can get started by conducting a visual inspection of your buildings.

Tip of the Month:

Conduct a visual inspection of your business inside your facilities (main buildings and out-buildings, rooms, hallways, garages, basements, etc.). Do a walk-through of your facilities. Are all areas neat and orderly? Is there evidence of any spills or leaks? Are MSDS sheets and safety instructions located in their proper locations (if applicable)? Are floor drains free from obstructions and properly working (if applicable)? Are chemical containers properly labeled? Are waste materials being properly disposed of?

After the walk-through, take action to correct any issues that are observed. Commend employees who exhibited exemplary habits regarding environmental compliance during your walk-through.
