July 29, 2010
STATEWIDE, MAINE July 26, 2010 The Eaton Peabody Foundation, a statewide charitable foundation of the law firm of Eaton Peabody, announces a $36,000 capital pledge to Campaign for Justice.
Organized in 2004, Campaign for Justice is the statewide, annual effort of Maine’s legal community to raise funds on behalf of six civil legal aid providers: Pine Tree Legal Assistance, Maine Volunteer Lawyers Project, Maine Equal Justice, Legal Services for the Elderly, Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project, and the Cumberland Legal Aid Clinic. The focus of these providers is to increase access to justice for low-income and elderly Maine people. Last year the Campaign for Justice helped just under 24,000 clients with a wide range of issues from illegal evictions to assistance in rightfully obtaining medical benefits.
For the past several years, Eaton Peabody has been a leading supporter of the Campaign physically and monetarily. The firm averages 1,200 hours of pro bono legal service per year working through the Volunteer Lawyers Project and Pine Tree Legal Assistance. This year, the Foundation decided to increase its monetary commitment by twenty percent.
“In the difficult economic climate all our neighbors and friends are confronting it simply made sense to assure that the Foundation made its resources available to keep the safety net of legal services available for all,” said Nat Putnam, the Chairman of the Eaton Peabody Foundation Board.
