DHS to push E-Verify for federal contractors, rescind No-Match rule

July 09, 2009

The Department of Homeland Security announced today that it will support regulation to award federal contracts to only those employers who participate in E-Verify, and that it will rescind the Social Security No-Match Rule in favor of E-Verify.

As noted in our earlier bulletin on this topic, E-Verify is a system for verifying employment eligibility which is in addition to the required I-9 process. E-Verify is currently voluntary for Maine employers, although the rule seeks to require that government agencies include a clause in certain federal contracts which would require subject contractors to participate.

The E-Verify rule for federal contractors is currently due to take effect September 8, 2009.
