Special tax incentive financing meeting set for Thursday

June 16, 2010

CARTHAGE — A special meeting to hear about possible affects tax incentive financing might have on the town if a wind turbine project is built has been set for 7 p.m. Thursday, June 17, at the Community Building.

First Selectman Steve Brown said Mathew Eddy, a consultant from Eaton Peabody Consulting Group, and Michael Rogers, a representative from Maine Revenue Services, will provide information on how such an action would affect the municipal revenue flow.

“People had asked for more information when a petition was presented to the board last month asking for a moratorium,” Brown said.

Although anyone from the public may attend, Brown said it is particularly important for members of the Carthage Budget Committee to be present. He said Alison Hagerstrom, director of the Greater Franklin Development Corp., will also be present.

About 70 people, including several from nearby towns that have wind projects proposed, attended a public information session last week presented by developers, Patriot Renewables LLC of Quincy, Mass.

As presented, the company wants to build 13 turbines along a ridge that includes Saddleback Mountain, and another four turbines if the town succeeds in getting clear title to property adjacent to the ridge.

A special town meeting asking whether Carthage residents want a six-month moratorium on wind turbine development has been set for 7 p.m. Monday, June 21, at the Community Building.
